Myxobacteria motility: a novel 3D model of rippling behaviour in Myxococcus xanthus

چکیده
Bacterial populations provide interesting examples of how relatively simple signalling mechanisms can result in complex behaviour of the colony. A well studied example of this phenomenon can be found in myxobacteria; cells can coordinate themselves to form intricate rippling patterns and fruiting bodies using localised signalling. Our work attempts to understand and model this emergent behaviour. We developed an off-lattice Monte Carlo simulation of ripple formation using a using a software framework we have created and show how rippling is a consequence of the combined effect of cell biochemistry and cell physics.

The Mechanistic Basis of Myxococcus xanthus Rippling Behavior and Its Physiological Role during Predation
Myxococcus xanthus cells self-organize into periodic bands of traveling waves, termed ripples, during multicellular fruiting body development and predation on other bacteria. To investigate the mechanistic basis of rippling behavior and its physiological role during predation by this Gram-negative soil bacterium, we have used an approach that combines mathematical modeling with experimental obs...

Myxococcus xanthus is a common soil bacterium with an intricate multicellular lifestyle that continues to challenge the way in which we conceptualize the capabilities of prokaryotic organisms. Myxococcus xanthus is the preferred laboratory representative from the Myxobacteria, a family of organisms distinguished by their ability to form highly structured biofilms that include tentacle-like pack...
متن کاملEstimation of Protein and Domain Interactions in the Switching Motility System of Myxococcus Xanthus
The gram-negative myxobacterium Myxococcus xanthus is equipped with an interesting motility system that allows it to reverse direction on average every 8 minutes by switching the construction of two motility engines at the ends of this rod-shaped bacterium. While the mechanisms responsible for timing and engine construction/deconstruction are relatively well understood, there are several compet...

Myxococcus xanthus is a common Gram-negative bacterium that moves by a process called gliding motility. In myxobacteria, two distinct mechanisms for gliding have been discovered. S-type motility requires the extension, attachment, and retraction of type IV pili. The other mechanism, designated as A-type motility, may be driven by the secretion and swelling of slime; however, experiments to conf...
متن کاملMyxobacteria: Moving, Killing, Feeding, and Surviving Together
Myxococcus xanthus, like other myxobacteria, is a social bacterium that moves and feeds cooperatively in predatory groups. On surfaces, rod-shaped vegetative cells move in search of the prey in a coordinated manner, forming dynamic multicellular groups referred to as swarms. Within the swarms, cells interact with one another and use two separate locomotion systems. Adventurous motility, which d...
